That’s all folks – with tenantspin mobile

It was a delight to be asked to help tenantspin with their last live stream and their first in such a long time – when they made arts engagement projects they broke the mould after this one – I think it was less art and more Guerilla TV – over the years they had some shows, some of which are available on their Live Stream and over the years I tried to get them involved in as many projects as I possible could.  I’m thinking here about when we got them over to the Arts Councils grand AGM where the participants met and interviewed the Council member of all the Arts Council’s across the country.  I did a bit of live reporting there also.

So last night after “The End of Transmission” part of the tentantspin event we just went for a wander around the gallery space with camera and laptop – working off WiFi and here is that short and not very interesting section. I still love the immediacy of it all.

I won’t say that it was an easy set up for this as we had to try 5 different cameras linked via Firewire to a Mac – they didn’t work so when we pulled out my old windows laptop and it worked first time which I made me laugh.
Do watch the last show in case you missed it, so good to see so many familiar faces and so sad that John McGuirk wasn’t there to see the end.  RIP John.

Game changing move by Channel 4

Channel 4 to simulcast all content online.

This game changing move by C4 will really pave the way for all broadcasters to follow suit, the BBC this summer are broadcasting live every event from the Olympics, across multiple platforms. Phone, iPad generally any internet connected device, including TV’s.

As reported in New Media Age website.

Channel 4’s head of viewer relationship management Steve Forde told new media age the move is part of its overall data-driven strategy to reward viewers for registering and providing more information.

“We have learnt content is king when it comes to what viewers want and because of that we are building our bank of rewards and benefits for people who register,” he said.

So the move is data driven, collecting information on  viewer watching habits which will allow them to recommend programmes based on this data but also adverts and it is these adverts and the potential advertising revenue that are really driving this move. They want to create a digital nest that sees us engaging with their programmes while their advertisers engage with us.

Look ahead 2 years and we will be sharing what we watch with our friends in a Getglue fashion but within the walls of Channel4book.

Personally I will be unfriending anyone who watches Friends.

The Democratising Role of the Web

Money - Liverpool Biennial

Way back in November I went to the The Roy Stringer Lecture – on the Democratising Role of the Web,  at Fact Liverpool.

The speakers included

The event was based around Marth Lane Fox’s visit to Liverpool as she is the Nation’s Digital Champion and has been encouraging people to get on line – with the fantastic Give an Hour initiative. This is a really great idea as I want more people to see the benefits of getting online as proved when we ran the day long How Why DIY event in Aug 2010.

The democratising role of the Web

Liverpool has a population of about 440,000 with 100,000 of those not having daily access to the internet. Information is power and having access to that information can give the individual more power over their lives and over the lives of their children.   That is the Digital Divide that is faced in Liverpool and laughingly isn’t being addressed by any of the councillors or local officials, bringing Martha Lane Fox to town really didn’t resolve any of the issues faced by the people that need access to the internet most.  On a recent visit to a Merseyside school the teacher there told me that the pupils hang around the  school longer so they can use the computers and internet for homework, it is great that these children  get access but not all schools and pupils will be so lucky.

Check out the Digital Inclusion Strategic Framework from Liverpool City Council

During the lecture Martha mentioned that Microsoft are making recycled PC’s available for £95 for those on benefits. But as Richard Smedly rightly pointed out that we throw away millions of PC’s every year that should be recycled with free yes free software and passed on to those in need. Maybe some money should be spent on helping small organisations do just this especially as about 1/2 of adults not online hit 3 or more deprivation domains, then this issue needs to be addressed.

One final comment on this lecture is that the choice of panellist was bewildering, absolutely bewildering with more sense coming from the audience than from at least one of the panel members.

Do you think this Lecture contributes to the debate around democratising the Internet?

Updated Ustream producer

Ok, so I was kinda charmed by this Ustream video about their new Producer software but then I am easily charmed. But you watch and you decide it is pretty cool to consider that you can have your own TV producing package on your PC or Mac just for those times when you need multi camera functionality switching between pre recorded video and computer screen.

Might be good for Ignite Liverpool to invest in such a piece of software. I wonder what the conversion rate between $ and £ is at the moment…
