martha lane foxMartha Lane Fox is coming to town to promote the Race Online. What's that I hear you say well it's all about getting people online not some people having a virtual race using connect controllers.

Liverpool has an appalling record for the numnber of people who aren't online or have access to online resources on a daily basis. One of the reasons behind How Why DIY is to encourage people to get online and not be afraid of using technology. See the Liverpool Digital Inclusion Strategy Framework (google doc) for a real lack of ambition.

Martha is going to have a busy day on 1st November 2011 as she is first at the Liverpool Innovation Park talking about "How can business close the digital divide?" and then at FACT Liverpool for the Roy Stringer Lecture. You can probably still attend both if you are quick enough.

At Liverpool Innovation Park, Martha Lane Fox the well known Digital Entrepreneur and founder of Lastminute.com, will be discussing How can businesses close the digital devide

The Race Online 2012 campaign is working to support the 8.7 million people in the UK who have never used the internet. She will be launching the local Go On It's Liverpool campaign at Liverpool Innovation Park, Edge Lane at 11.30am on Tuesday 1st November.  Working with the public, private and voluntary sector groups she hopes to recruit 5,000 champions in Liverpool with a view to supporting 25,000 individuals get on-line.

go_ON_itslpool_sqJoin Liverpool Innovation park on the 1st November to show your support and find out more about the aims of the campaign.  Prior to the event they would like to present Martha with a list of companies who have already signed up as champions and who have pledged to undertake some activity.  You can book on to the event, become a digital champion and make your pledge via the links below.

 *   Attend the launch on 1st November, and find out what other companies are doing to support their own employees and the larger community to increase their digital skills.<http://www.liverpoolchamber.org.uk/events.html?eventID=2795> (I'll probably do this)

Places are limited so please book as soon as possible to guarantee a place.

Later that same day at The Roy Stringer lecture at FACT

FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), in partnership with Amaze, presents the next Roy Stringer lecture with respected entrepreneur and digital champion, Martha Lane Fox . Martha is the UK's Digital Champion and heads up the Race Online 2012 campaign which aims to get the 8.3 million UK residents who have never used the Internet online. She came to prominence after setting up lastminute.com with Brent Hoberman in 1998. She is also a non-executive director of Marks & Spencer, Channel 4 and mydeco.com.

Martha joins a panel of guests including Professor Andy Miah, community engagement expert Patrick Fox (FACT / Arena Housing), Director of Strategy at Aurora Media John Eagan, and Natalie Gross, Managing Partner at Amaze, to discuss 'the democratising role of the web'.

The Reader Organisation are looking for web workers to get involved in a project coming up at the end of January to help them promote reading to the people of Liveprool as part of an event called Impact48.

The Reader has high hopes for the weekend and is looking for volunteers who can build apps, develop a website for the Liverpool – City of Readers’ project and create a marketing campaign that uses social media to promote the project. One app which the Readers think would be great would be a reading tour of Liverpool linking stories, authors and events to a mobile app – but a key aspect of the weekend is to find new exciting ways to get the city reading using technology.
