What is podcasting

For years now people have been able to listen to sound and video files on the internet and these days it is a good bit easier to do than it used to be, as new audio compression formats become standard.

What!!!!  I hear you say.  - A compression format is how small  you can squeeze an audio file and MP3 is the one format which we are interested in here.

MP3? - This is the standard format for squeezing audio files down to.  Hence the expression MP3 player and a popular player is the iPod but all sorts of electrical items can now play mp3 files - like my toaster

The expresssion "MP3 player" comes from the name of the compressed format that the digital audio are squeezed into MP3.  The sound or video files are compressed into formats which can be dowloaded faster, MP3  - hence the expression MP3 player.

Our iTunes Store

Subscribing to podcast refers to the way sound or video files can be automatically sent to your computer. To subscibe to our podcasts you will need software such as iTunes, this software is free to download from the web and it regularly checks the internet for updated episiodes of podcasts that you have subscribed to.

You can then listen to these podcasts on your computer, or move the file to your MP3 player, flash drive, mobile phone or toaster in my case.

In order to subscribe to us with iTunes you must have iTunes installed on your computor. You can Download iTunes for FREE here

Once you have installed iTunes you can find our iTunes store (pictured above) by searching the iTunes store for Defnet Media using the search bar in the top right corner of iTunes.

Feeds - If you have Internet Explorer 7 or higher then you should be familiar with a little orange RSS Feed sysmbol (which appears at the bottom our right hand menu).  The RSS Feed button is a simple way of letting you know that you can subscribe to that website or podcast. By hitting the feed button you can start your software and subscribe easily.

If you would like to know more then the BBC are a fantastic resource for information on podcasting and have some great podcasts. More...
