Reviews and more
The cultural feeding frenzy of 2008 has subsided and many of us are looking for a hook. Maybe the story of how a teenage punk runaway saved the city's floundering authorities from humiliation is a little too Hollywood.
It is very Liverpool though. Its real heroes have always been driven by a desire to challenge perceptions and to right wrongs. These qualities seemed to be in short supply as plans for the year of culture were being finalised. And that is where Jayne Casey came in.

Not that that's a bad thing
Deaf School have just announced another gig after the sell out success of the Everyman gigs and their farewell to Hope Street Feast concert only a couple of weeks ago. The gig coming up this December will see them returning to the 02 Academy, where they played to a packed house last year.
‘Ghost Stories: A Night Opera’ was an evocative, innovative and haunting musical experiment
Performed in the atmospheric Gothic setting of St Luke’s Church. Neil Campbell, accompanied by the soaring and sublime vocals of Anne Taft, composed the music for this project whilst the eerie soundscape and electronics throughout were effectively handled by Michael Beiert. It was apparent that Campbell’s technically skilled classical guitar playing combined diverse musical influences, including elements of Spanish flamenco, minimalism, and progressive and experimental rock music. The music of ‘Ghost Stories’ itself is certainly compositionally suggestive of the subtle and elusive compositions of French impressionistic music such as Debussy and Satie, as well as the ambient pieces of more contemporary musicians such as Harold Budd and Brian Eno.
The Picket was a cool respite on one of the hottest nights of the summer when La Excelencia came to Liverpool.
Whilst their infectious salsa had people dancing right from the start it was the third track when they really started to move the room. By the end of the set they had the whole audience dancing from the mechanical steps of the salsa newbies to the bewitching moves of the more experienced dancers.
I heard Batelages by Etron Fou Leloublan by a stroke of luck. I love coming across a great LP or film that nobody has recommended and I hadn't the slightest idea existed. Maybe its the closest you can come to properly discovering something great for yourself, stripped of any preconceptions. Some of my favourite LP's and Films I was lucky enough to chance upon, and I can't deny that they remain favourites partly because of the chance, the surprise element.

The Road
Coming up at FACT, Liverpool this weekend.
The Road
, set in post apocalyptic America stars Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron and is an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer winning novel. It's the story of an unnamed man and his son as they walk through the dark wasteland that once was and their struggle for survival against all odds including the odd cannibal or two.
It sounds thoroughly depressing, perfect after a week of heavy snow and bleakness.
